da mrbet: Eyebrows were raised when Pep Guardiola’s starting XI for the make-or-break Chelsea clash last night was released. The Spaniard is known for his tactical twists and second-guessing the formation he will be playing is often a fool’s errand, but the real surprise against the Blues came in the form of Fabian Delph being handed his first Premier League start of 2016/17.
The England international has fallen somewhat off the radar since his controversial move from Aston Villa to the Etihad Stadium in 2015, with competition for places and injury set-backs having stunted his development. Alas, with some first-team headaches for his side’s trip to Chelsea, Guardiola elected to thrust the 27-year-old into his team. Even though the result, a 2-1 loss, wasn’t what he would have wanted, the midfielder’s performance was promising…
As the numbers show, Delph was heavily involved in Man City’s play, with his 124 touches of the ball the most of any player on the pitch, while his 93% pass success from 103 passes illustrate that he was making the Citizens tick. As well as the standout stats, the enforcer made four tackles and four interceptions, while committing three fouls as he battled hard to keep Chelsea at bay.
A summer move away from Man City still seems the most likely outcome for Delph when this season ends, but he’s shown that the promise he had at Villa remains, which might even tempt Guardiola try andÂkeep him for 2017/18.
