da heads bet: West Ham manager Sam Allardyce believes that if newly acquired striker Andy Carroll can rekindle the form that saw him score 31 goals in 80 appearances at Newcastle United, then his side can finish in the top ten this season.
Although Carroll didn’t manage to get onto the score sheet on his debut at home to Fulham on Saturday, the 23-year-olds aerial threat and link-up play contributed to two West Ham goals in a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Allardyce told the BBC, “If Andy gets 15 to 20 goals; we can get into the top 10.” Carroll has more to his striking artillery than pure goal-scoring. The forward can also act as a useful target man, bringing other players into the game.
Allardyce believes that Carroll can bring the best out of other players at the club, “Andy’s going to be our main man and you’ve got to get people supporting him. I thought the support [against Fulham] from Matt Taylor and Ricardo Vaz Te was superb alongside Momo Diame.”
A player who enjoyed a successful spell playing alongside Carroll at Newcastle is the current West Ham captain Kevin Nolan. Allardyce, who managed both players at Tyneside, believes that Nolan will score a lot of goals this campaign as long as both players stay fit, “by the time Andy had been transferred to Liverpool [in the January transfer window], he had scored 11 goals and by the time Kevin had finished the season, he had scored 13 and they were really comfortable in the division.”
